Founded in Baltimore in 1896, our goal has remained the same: helping teenage girls who are in need of residential placement due to pregnancy, abuse, or other circumstances. In 1927 the agency moved to its present home at West 32nd Street and Crittenton Place, located on three and one-half acres of land in the Hampden area of Baltimore City.
The agency, once a haven solely for pregnant, unmarried women, expanded to serve teen mothers and their children in 1971. Subsequently, the AWARE (Adolescents Willing to Act Responsibly and Ethically) program for non-pregnant adolescents was opened in 1976. The girls and young women served are ages 13-20 and come from counties throughout the state of Maryland. Most have been in foster care, and a few have been referred by the Department of Juvenile Services.
Gender-responsive services are offered to clients and the members of their personal support system in the interest of developing attitudes and life skills that promote movement toward independence. All programs, activities and services are conducted in a manner that is sensitive to and shows respect for the racial and ethnic diversity of clients and constituents. Today, there are 38 licensed beds for girls and young women. The agency’s caring and supportive staff also offers services to the fathers of the children as needed.
Florence Crittenton Services of Baltimore provides the following programs and services:
