Florence Crittenton Programs of South Carolina–Charleston

charleston logoFrom its inception, Florence Crittenton Programs of South Carolina has been an organization concerned with the future of single parents and their children. In 1897, a network of altruistic volunteers came together to provide support and limited residential care in their own homes to single pregnant women and mothers in need. In 1923, the agency was incorporated as a nonprofit organization. Construction began on our residential home in 1927, and the first client was admitted to the facility in 1932. In 1976, a program of professional services was established and in 1986 a daytime school program began.

Today, Florence Crittenton Programs (FCP), located in downtown Charleston, serves the entire state, assisting approximately 500 clients per year. Our mission is to provide and promote those comprehensive medical, educational, and support services that will most effectively ensure the well-being and self-sufficiency of single parents and their infants in South Carolina.

Throughout our 110-year history, we have striven to build strong families, healthy teens and self-sufficient young adults through education, counseling, medical care, and social support, and by providing a safe haven for clients in need. From its humble beginnings, the ongoing vision of the agency has always been to provide hope, safety, and opportunity, so that every child and family served has a sense of self-worth and the capacity to achieve their potential.

Programs

Florence Crittenton Programs of South Carolina’s mission is to provide and promote those comprehensive medical, educational and support services that will most effectively promote the well-being and self-sufficiency of single parents and their infants in South Carolina. We take a holistic approach in dealing with the complex problem of teen pregnancy with four programs that target multiple areas of intervention from many angles. Both our Residential Program and Day Program focus on treatment and care during pregnancy. Our Residential Program is the only comprehensive program in South Carolina that provides medical care, counseling, education, and a wide range of services to single pregnant teenagers and other young women in need.

Our Day Program offers comprehensive, year-round academic, medical, and clinical services for pregnant and parenting teens who are leaving their home school and are therefore in need of an educational alternative specifically designed to provide a higher level of care and service on a non-residential basis. Our Family Development Program addresses care and outreach after babies are born by providing comprehensive, home-based support services for up to two years to at-risk, single-parent families with children ages five and under. Our Community Education Program, called “GET REAL! (About Teen Pregnancy),” focuses on the prevention of teen pregnancy by creating a baseline level of awareness in the community, so that community leaders, educators, businesspeople, parents and teens all consider themselves part of the solution for reducing teen pregnancy.
